Vertical prayer flag banners are called, “Darchog” which means "flagstaff”. Hung vertically like banners, attached to a pole along their vertical edge. Legend ascribes the origin of the prayer flag to the Buddha, whose prayers were written on battle flags, signifying the commitment of his followers to the practices of Loving Kindness. These beautiful banners are inscribed with many,many prayers to benefit beings and the land. The central figure on these banners is, Padmasambhava (aka) Guru Rinpoche. Padmasambhava was the one who brought Buddhism to Tibet, and to do so he had to subdued the local demonic forces. In accordance with the Buddhist teachings, the negative beings were not harmed. Through the power of his great wisdom and compassion, he was able to turn the hearts and minds from being harmful, to become powerful emanations of love and compassion and ultimatly to spiritual awakening.
